Kawasaki Z900: First ride incoming

Published: 30 January 2017

MCN guest tester Phil West is currently in Almeria in sunny, southern Spain where he’s just finished riding Kawasaki’s new Ninja 650, but there’s more to come from the Japanese giant (that’s Kawasaki, not Phil, he’s from Lincolnshire): today he's going to be having his first ride of the new 2017 Kawasaki Z900, too!

This latest newcomer not only rekindles a great name from Kawasaki’s glorious history in the 1970s, when its four-cylinder superbikes were the envy of the motorcycling world, it is also an all-new performance roadster powered by a new 948cc inline-four-cylinder engine based on that of the existing Z1000 and making 126bhp.

TOP STORIES

First unveiled at the EICMA show in Milan in November, the Z900 also has an all-new frame which comprises a lightweight, tubular steel trellis similar to that of the new Z650, while its suspension comprises 41mm upside down forks which are adjustable for rebound and preload at the front plus a horizontally-mounted single shock absorber with rebound and preload adjustability at the rear end.

The front brakes, meanwhile, consist of twin 300mm discs gripped by dual opposed four-piston Nissin calipers, with the ABS system also supplied by Nissin. Styling, meanwhile, though also all new is the familiar, aggressive ‘Sugomi’ style of both the Z800 and also its bigger brother, the Z1000.

The newcomer is expected to replace the outgoing but popular Z800 and, with extra power and significantly reduced weight than that bike, it looks set to be an even closer rival to Triumph’s Street Triple.

We’ll be riding the new Kawasaki throughout the day and Phil will be reporting back online here and through MCN’s social media accounts with his impressions of the new bike. You’ll also be able to read our full review here as soon as possible.
