Honda’s Pan European is getting a complete makeover for 2002.
The changes are expected to be so extensive that it’s effectively an all-new model, with brand new bodywork, engine and aluminium chassis. We’ll bring you pictures as soon as we get them.
Like the 2002 VFR800, it will also benefit from Honda’s Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (V-TEC).
The system manages to simultaneously boost power and improve economy, by altering the valve timing and cam lift as revs increase, combining the economy advantage of a de-tuned engine with the extra power of a tuned one.
Insiders say the changes amount to the biggest change since the model was launched in 1989.
The tourer has only had minor changes since the introduction of its ABS braking system in 1992.
Honda UK is refusing to officially comment on the bike, but it is certain to be officially unveiled along with the new Blade, VFR800, Blade-powered Hornet 900 and an updated SP-1, on September 10.
Changes to the SP-1 will result in it getting the SP-2 name already attributed to the WSB racer. Few details are yet available.
One source, who has seen the SP-2, said: " Some of the advances and developments learned via HRC through racing will be on the new bike. "
