Yamaha MT-07 and MT-09 SP double threat

Published: 06 November 2017

Yamaha’s popular MT-07 gets an update and the MT-09 gets a flashier SP cousin

The MT range has been an enormous success for Yamaha thanks to a pair of great engines, fantastic styling and competitive pricing. For 2018 they’ve improved the range even further with an update on the MT-07 and the addition of the MT-09 SP.

The MT-07 is one of Yamaha’s bestselling models due to its lively 698cc crossplane engine, so they’ve done the sensible thing and left it well alone. Instead they’ve refreshed the styling to make it look a little more like the MT-09. The riding position has been improved with a new saddle that has been reprofiled and extended to the sides of the tank. The only let down of the MT-07 was its suspension, which Yamaha have improved: the forks have been revised for a sportier character while the rear suspension has been fitted with a new rebound damping adjuster. There’s no price yet but Yamaha say it will be available in March.

The MT-09 SP follows the MT-10 SPs path by adding flash kit to the standard bike. The majority of the changes are in the suspension, so the MT-09 SP gets an Ohlins rear shock with remote preload adjustment while the front end gets a new set of fully-adjustable forks. The MT-09 SP also gets a colour scheme to match the MT-10SP as well as blacked out controls. The MT-09 SP is due out in January.
