Bike chain review: Abus Granit Extreme Plus 59 1.7-metre

Abus Granit Extreme Plus 59 1.7-metre, £279.99

Time owned: Five months

What’s good? I once interviewed a former prolific bike thief who, while assuring me he could defeat any chain, repeatedly and without prompting used the phrase “even an Abus Granit”.

It’s the best recommendation I can imagine. In his mind, that branding appeared above all others to signal a more difficult task ahead. If you want something resembling a ferry anchor chain, such products are available.

But if you want something that provides the best deterrent possible in a form that’s possible to carry on your bike and use everyday,

I don’t think you’ll find better on the market than this. At 1.7 metres, it’s usually long enough to reach from road to lamppost and it has a satisfyingly easy-to-use lock mechanism.

What’s not? That’s easy – the price. It may be an effective theft deterrent but at £280 I can’t help feeling I may already have been robbed.

I own motorcycles that cost me less. A shorter 1.4-metre one costs £250 and a 1.1-metre one £220, but these may not reach a lamppost.
