Bering Banks coat, £250
Mile covered: 4000/one year
What’s good? It serves just as well as a smart everyday coat as it does for riding. It’s Gore-Tex, so there’s no question of water seepage.
There’s removable armour at shoulders, elbows and back. A thermal lining is also removable, so you can use it all year – in summer it makes a very good mac.
There’s also a hood which zips off easily to stop it flapping in the wind. Instead of poppers it uses neat magnetic fasteners which are very easy to fasten and undo with fat, gloved fingers.
What’s not? It’s great if you’ve got to get somewhere by bike and look smart when you arrive but obviously it’s a compromise while riding.
Its length, which seems designed with scooters in mind more than bikes, means part of it is always under your bum. I’d prefer more outside pockets than the three it has.
The magnetic fasteners aren’t as secure as traditional poppers and the top one always comes undone. With the thermal lining in, it’s not quite as warm as it looks.
I worry about the bottom-end of the zip scratching tanks, although this hasn’t actually happened so far.
