Held Carese jacket, £499.99; Torno trousers, £399.99
Miles covered/time: 3000/15 months
What’s good: This is Held’s adventure suit from its Gore-Tex Quattrotempi range. Yes, you can buy jacket or trousers separately, but zipped together they make a formidable combination.
The Held Carese jacket is built from strong but flexible top-flight 500D Cordura with approved armour in all contact areas and has a removable Gore-Tex membrane.
There are more pockets than I know what to do with and it has sealable vents on arms, shoulders chest and shoulders – some are zipped closure while others are held open with magnets (clever this). Waist and arm adjustment keeps the jacket tight and the soft collar fits snug with it Velcro fastening.
The Torno trousers are of the same build quality with the addition of durable Pittards soft leather on the rump and Nomex heat resistant lining in the thigh area.
It’s all good. No, seriously, it’s a stupendous on/off-road suit that has stood up to arid desert, snow-topped mountains and sheet rain with the odd tumble along the way.
It’s comfortable to the point where I’m starting to prefer it to full leathers especially on hot days. German design and technology is, as I’ve found, not the preserve of white goods manufacturers like Bosch.
What’s not: At first look you’d think the price is horrifically misprinted. But then compared to equal quality-spec suits, or even one or two-piece leathers, the cost isn’t so bad.
