Rev’It Neptune GTX suit, (jacket, £379.99, trousers £289.99)
Time tested: 13,000 miles/One year
What’s good? This is a very versatile suit, and it has to be since Rev’It has aimed it at four-season riders. The outer layer is just that, an outer layer holding the armour. Inside that is a removable waterproof Gore-Tex lining that takes care of keeping you dry. The final removable layer is the thermal lining. The layers were a godsend on my Tunisia trip. I used all layers for the cold early morning run to the Eurotunnel, before removing the thermal part of the way through France. The waterproof lining came out on the ferry to Tunisia and once I arrived in Tunisia I opened all the vents – on the forearms, chest and thighs - to try to keep me cool. The pockets are big enough for at least a wallet and phone, although they’re not waterproof. If you want a suit that’ll perform anywhere in any conditions I highly recommend this one.
What’s not? After a year of heavy use including the Tunisia trip, some off-roading in Wales and a trip the Elephant Rally, the trousers aren’t quite waterproof around the groin any more. Water is getting in, leaving me with soggy pants after long, wet rides. A tiny bit of stitching has come undone at the groin, which may be responsible for the water getting in, but then the inner waterproof layer should stop it getting any further.
