BMW BlackLeather jacket, £490

Tested by Andy Downes

Time tested: 18 months/9000 miles

What’s good? After a year this jacket is still in use on a very frequent basis thanks to the tough water buffalo leather, stylish looks and the reassurance of the shoulder and elbow armour. I think the ‘aged’ look does a good job of keeping the jacket unobtrusive when worn off the bike. It has three outside pockets, two inner pockets and a pocket for a back protector too. The metal zips are great quality and the waist adjusters keep the fit nice and snug. The BMW logos are subtle too.

What’s not? It isn’t waterproof but I have treated it with a leather waterproofing agent that works brilliantly (www.duckswax.co.uk). I need to wear underlayers in colder weather, but the fit allows for that. Another downside is that it’s very expensive.
