MCN’s top 5 winter essentials

Published: 19 December 2016

MCN staff have sploshed through enough puddles, ridden through plenty of lorry spray and slogged the length of the country (and beyond) in driving rain, to make sure we thoroughly test the kit we’re wearing.

In the winter months we have to suffer cold and prematurely dark evenings, not to mention wet, icy and sometimes snow-covered roads in our every day duties. Here are five of MCN’s top-rated products that we couldn’t have done it without…

TOP STORIES

Philips Extreme Vision bulb H4
MCN says:
“The X-Treme Vision bulb claims to provide up to 100% more light than standard halogen bulbs in both dip and main beam. Without scientific equipment it’s difficult to measure that claim, but the X-Treme Vision noticeably belts out its beam further and wider than standard bulbs. My CBR600F’s headlamp is now at least half as bright again making the definition between tarmac and verge much clearer, a constant issue down the mucky country lanes of East Anglia.

V2 sponge
MCN says:
“My first experience of a V2 sponge was on an early morning ride in North Yorkshire. Mucky roads and low-angle sunshine were wrecking what should have been a fantastic ride and making me dog slow (well, even slower than usual…). My mate waited to see what was up and when he saw my visor, summoned a V2 from his jacket pocket. Thirty seconds later, I was back on the road and happy as Larry. Superb. The sponge couldn’t be easier to use, all you have to do is keep it wet (in the provided plastic bag) and give it a rinse now and then. A few wipes and a buff with one of the cloths included in the pack and 20-20 vision is restored.

EDZ windproof neck warmer
MCN says:
“I’ve used this neck warmer for the past two winters and it has proved to be a warm and unobtrusive fit keeping me both warm and comfortable on short blasts and lengthy motorway jaunts alike. I’m now in the middle of my third winter with it, and it’s become an essential part of my riding wardrobe. It’s even retained most of its elasticity. Highly recommended.”

Decent tyres
MCN says:

Winter is obviously not the greatest time to be hacking about on less than adequate rubber. The risk of ice, water and general colder temperatures don’t make for the optimum riding conditions. You can help yourself by investing in a decent set of tyres; there are plenty of options available too. New rubber can completely transform the feel of your bike. And feeling what’s happening underneath you is essential on the bike during winter.”

Nikwax waterproofing wax for leather
MCN says:
“This new wax has performed three important jobs on my prized Lewis Leathers boots. Firstly, it’s (as the name suggests) further bolstered their waterproofing – not a drop gets through at the seams. Secondly, an application of this wax to my recently cleaned boots has actually dulled some of the more minor surface scratches that boots pick up with prolonged all-weather use. And thirdly, it’s left them terribly shiny, after a quick post-wax buffing. This stuff is really very cheap, too – a 60ml tube will do a couple of pairs of boots, easy.”
