HP Race Calibration Kit for BMW S1000RR, £848.10
Time used: One round of MRO Powerbikes, Cadwell Park
What’s good: This software tool for racers allows you to further customise the S1000RR’s electronics. It works with the standard ECU, but has even more functions when used in conjunction with an HP Race Power Kit (which includes a new ECU and exhaust system), which I also have (look out for a review of this in a future issue).
Plug your computer into the back of your bike and at a click of a button you can adjust everything from the fuelling, ignition timing, a bewildering level of traction control parameters in each of the riding modes, quickshift settings and a pitlane speed limiter.
Most impressively there’s a standard set of engine maps that I use for racing that are designed for the specific shape, size and type of Dunlop Ntech slicks I’m using. It’s impressive, to say the least and helps you squeeze even more out of the S1000RR in track conditions.
The traction control is so good you can use the flashing orange light as a guide – if it’s not on, you’re not riding hard enough! If you’re serious about racing, this tool is almost obligatory.
What’s not: The software itself is simple and straightforward to use, but what it does is very technical - more powerful than a Power Commander. You’ll also need lots of set-up and track time to explore all the parameters available, so it’s time-consuming to get the best from.
