The award was presented in recognition of Alex’s performance in the June meeting held at Knockhill when Riding the YPE RVF 400; Alex won both races and broke the lap record!

This is an award steeped in history, since 1947 Motorcycle Racing in Scotland used to take place on the beaches of St Andrews & Kirkcaldy then in 1952 the opportunity arose to move the racing to a circuit inside Kirkcaldys’ Beverage Park. There was only one meeting a year and the Ross Leigh Trophy dates back to the very first meeting.
When the Beverage Park circuit was deemed to be getting too dangerous because of the proximity of the “trees” road racing in Scotland moved to the airfield circuit at East Fortune just outside Edinburgh in “72” after which; the new Knockhill circuit opened its doors in “74”. These two venues are still used today for both Club and the Scottish Championship Racing.

Past winners of this award read like a who’s who of Scottish motorcycle racing, names like Bob Macintyre, Bill Simpson, Jock Taylor, Alan Duffus, Jim Moody, Rodger Bennett, Less Shand & Alex’s YPE team mate Torquil Patterson.

In other news, the move for next year onto 600’s is well underway; Alex is expected to get in the saddle of a Yamaha R6 for the first time at Donington Park on the 4th December. However it is not expected to be a Yamaha he will run next year. As after having sold both his CB500 and Honda RVF machines, we have just taken delivery of a new GSXR 600 which Alex will use in the 2007 Scottish Championships and work is underway to prepare it. This type of machine was chosen as it will be identical to the machine which it is hoped Alex will contend the inaugural year of “The GSXR Trophy” on. This championship organised by the sports governing body will be ran at Premier tracks in England including the likes of Silverstone, Oulton Park, & Brands Hatch and has the prime directive to search out and promote young talent.
However with an entry cost of £12,000 Alex will need to find a sponsor; but the rewards will be remarkable! If any one is interested in sharing this rewarding adventure contact Alex at alex@minimotoracer.com.
