Gobert's back again

Former GP, WSB, and AMA star Anthony Gobert is making another comeback, after signing to ride for a new Kawasaki superbike team in the Australian series.

The controversial star, whose career has been punctuated by moments of dazzling genius as well as times of darkness, is signed to the MLCP Kawasaki squad – the ‘M’ standing for Muzzy’s – to ride a ZX-10R.

Gobert, now 30, first made his name after some spectacular rides in the Aussie series, and as a teenage race-winning wildcard in WSB, before signing full-time to race for the works Muzzy Kawasaki in WSB in 1995 and 1996.

He then switched to Suzuki GP team, which he left midseason after a fall out, before re-establishing his career in the US championship with Ducati.

More moves saw him join the ill-fated Bimota WSB team, who he amazingly won a race for on the uncompetitive SB8K, before a move back to the States with Yamaha on an R7.

He split with them when they axed their superbike program, and after a stint as occasional wildcard in WSS races, and an abortive ride with a Spanish Formula Extreme team, is now focused on riding in front of his home fans again.

Fans watering at the mouth over the thought of a wildcard ride at the Phillip Island round of the series are likely to be disappointed, with the Pirelli one-make tyre rule usually ruling domestic teams out.
