Short Track UK decides Champions of Short Track in Peterborough

Peterborough’s East of England Showground will play host to the inaugural Champions of Short Track this weekend, a Grand Prix style event of Short Track UK.

The event will see adaptations of Supermoto, Motocross, Enduro and Dirt Track motorcycles competing in 12 rider, six lap frantic races.

Stars from short track racing including current STUK champion Marco Belli and European champion Jacopo Monti will line up at the event, with Britain’s Peter Boast and Tim Greig also set to take to the track.

Local interest comes from Stamford-based brothers Victor and Geoff Bull plus Spalding’s Gary Inman and Whittlesey’s Steve Coles.

The action will kick off on Saturday with the heats getting underway at 10.30am to find out which 24 riders will head into Sunday’s final. The finals, taking the form of a 18-heat winner takes all finale, will all be fought out on Sunday from 1.30pm.

The various rounds see the Men in Black staging racing on Speedway bikes from across the decades; at the other end of the age range, a junior class for the nation’s top junior Short Track racers, including the unbeaten Tom Woolley from Burton-on-Trent and Wisbech-based pretender to his national junior championship crown, teenager Tom Welbourn.

The thrills of the Moped Enduro race are likely to see the Peterborough circuit covered by suped up 50cc machines.

Visitors to the racing, which is taking place as part of the BMF Show, will also be able to see The Royal Artillery’s Flying Gunners motorcycle display team; plus further harum-scarum attractions in the form of  the all-new ‘Extreme Globeriders’, bike riding inside a wire mesh sphere plus that good old standard, the ‘Wall of Death’. 

There’s top music acts too with the main attraction on Saturday night being legendary punk rock combo, The Damned.

The Champions of Short Track will take place on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18, 2008 at the East of England Showground, Alwalton, Peterborough as part of this weekend’s annual BMF Show.
