Seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher was in hospital yesterday after crashing during a testing session for the 2009 German superbike championship.

The 40-year-old had been testing his Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade at the Cartagena circuit in Spain since Monday.

Schumacher said on his website: “I had an accident at the biking tests in Cartagena, and to be safe I went to a hospital.

“I was driving down the start-finish straight and when braking into the first corner I hit some bumps which made me fall.

“The checks in the hospital showed nothing and I am fine, therefore I went back home in the evening.”

He added: “Thanks a lot for the many wishes for recovery but I am fine as well today. Maybe I am not as flexible as I usually am but all checks showed no results.”

Since the F1 legend took to two wheels he has been no stranger to the tarmac, suffering several front end slides.
