Chris Burns returns to National Superstock

Chris Burns returns to National Superstock 1000 in 2010 riding with the Splitlath Motorsport squad.

The former WCM MotoGP rider will partner younger brother Joe to lead the Welsh outfit’s two-pronged attack on the fiercely competitive series onboard the stunning Aprilia RSV4 machine.

The Newcastle rider enjoyed a mixed 2009 season, which got off to a difficult start when an expected ride with STP Motorsport fell through just hours before it was due to begin due to budget difficulties.

Taking a handful of guest rides throughout the year, his greatest success came when he stepped in to the IDM German Superbike Championship to replace the injured reigning champion Martin Bauer, as team-mate to F1 legend Michael Schumacher.

Contesting just a handful of rounds, his best finish was a second place at the Sachsenring circuit in June.

Following a one-off ride Superstock ride at Silverstone onboard the Lenzkes Racing Suzuki in September, he has inked a deal with Splitlath Motorsport owner John Dimbylow to contest the 2010 championship – and he says he can’t wait to get started.

“I’m delighted to have reached a deal with John to contest the 2010 Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship with the Splitlath Motorsport team,” he said.

“The squad has already put itself on the map following the success it reached with Joe in the 600 series in 2009, and it’s clear to see John and the guys are determined to push even further as we contest the 1000s in 2010.

“Superstock has always been a series I’ve enjoyed, and where I’ve had some of my biggest results. People sometimes forget, but in 2002 I took four wins, and also won both of the UK rounds of the European Championship.

“However, I’ve not had a chance to give it another go. I’ve never had a full season since, so to get the opportunity now is just perfect for me.

“I’d like to thank John for giving me the opportunity, and I hope together we can go some way to developing this new Aprilia into a UK race-winning machine, which will put us in good stead to move up to the BSB Evolution class in 2011.”

John Dimbylow, Team Owner of Splitlath Motorsport added: “The RSV4 is a revolutionary machine in all sorts of ways and I believe Chris Burns is one of the best riders anywhere you care to look, so he is the man for the job.

“Chris turned down several top rides to join us and he fills us all with confidence. Chris works very well with his younger brother, Joe, and we feel that this will benefit the whole team and our forward progress over the coming seasons. Roll on April!”
