BSB: Brookes: 'There's more pressure on Haslam and Shakey than me'

Josh Brookes believes there’s more pressure on rivals Leon Haslam and Shane Byrne than him as they go into the final round of the MCE British Superbike championship this weekend.

Brookes sits second in the championship, 32 points from Haslam but reckons both series leader Haslam and third-placed Byrne have more pressure on their shoulders than him given how he’s fighting for the title with a team that was very much unproven at the start of the year.

“I’m in a more relaxed position than Leon will be and while I don’t want to speak out of place, I get the impression Shakey is at his best when he’s fastest in every session, leading and on a form that comes with a confidence wave,” Brookes explained.

“When things don’t go right for him, he appears that he carries that stress a lot more. He’s under more pressure now being third in the championship with a big gap to the front than he would be if he was leading.

“That means both of them are compromised, Leon has the pressure of leading the championship – I know all about that from 2015 and that was after nine consecutive race wins – and Shakey isn’t in his strongest environment.”
