Gibernau wins in Brno

Sete Gibernau has won Sunday’s Czech grand prix, leading the race from start to finish.

The Spaniard started the race from pole position and kept his lead throughout, but Valentino Rossi worked him hard.

The race for all three podium positions was close with Gibernau, Rossi, Max Biaggi, Alex Barros and Nicky Hayden in contention. Barros moved up to second place by lap 13 but Rossi soon moved back through and Barros crashed out of third a lap later leaving the way clear for Biaggi to put the pressure on Rossi.

Biaggi came close to taking Rossi’s second place on Lap 18 but ran wide on the exit letting Rossi slip back through and leaving Biaggi with a third place finish.

Hayden looked set to take fourth but got distracted by Biaggi’s attempt on Rossi and locked up the front wheel. This left the way clear for Biaggi’s team-mate Makoto Tamada to pass Loris Capirossi for fourth place.

Neil Hodgson managed to push up to an 11th place finish despite suffering another broken rib when Biaggi rode across in front of him during practice on Saturday.
