Yamaha get Camel cash

The Yamaha MotoGP squad will be sponsored by the Camel cigarette brand in 2006.

An agreement was announced on Monday, January 9th, 2006, between Yamaha Motor Co.,Ltd, and a subsidiary of Japan Tobacco Inc, JT International, giving birth to the “Camel Yamaha Team”

The deal follows the news that Camel will not continue a three-year partnership with the Honda Pons team, and that Max Biaggi may move to World Superbikes following the collapse of his GP career, due to difficulties with Honda Racing.

“A new chapter in the history of Camel in motorsport is just beginning,” commented JTI regional president Roberto Zanni. “After three years of great satsifaction in the premier class of the Wolrd Road Racing Championship, we are launching a new challenge for the title. Our new partnership with Yamaha, the historic, championship-winning Japanese manufacturer, will be highly motivating for us and it will be an honour to be by their side.”

Reigning World Champion Valentino Rossi and team-mate Colin Edwards will ride as the “Camel Yamaha Team” for the 2006 season, with testing beginning in Sepang, Malaysia, with a three-day test on 23rd, 24th and 25th January.
