The opening round of the 2006 MotoGP championship has begun at Jerez in Spain.

Valentino Rossi has gone fastest in the second free practice session, recording a time of 1:41.613. Loris Capirossi was second quickest, followed by GP rookie Dani Pedrosa. For the full list of times, click here.

Despite sitting out the morning session, Rossi was able to claim the fastest time on the 19th of 24 completed laps. Capirossi was just 0.012 seconds behind on the Ducati Desmosedici, with team-mate Sete Gibernau in fourth. Britian’s James Ellison was 19th quickest on the Tech 3 Yamaha, 1.458 seconds behind Alex Hoffman, and six places behind team-mate Carlos Checa.

MotoGP free practice 1: Loris Capirossi has gone fastest with a time of 1:56.260 on the Ducati Desmosedici, closely followed by the Hondas of Marco Melandri and Casey Stoner. Jose Luis Cardoso was a surprise fourth quickest on the Pramac Ducati, and Shinya Nakano in fifth. James Ellison is 15th, ahead of John Hopkins and Colin Edwards.
