MotoGP: Eugene Laverty rues tyre choice mistake in Assen

1 of 1

Eugene Laverty described his Assen 250 GP race as embarrassing after he was lapped on his way to a bitterly disappointing 21st place.

Laverty ran a soft Dunlop rear tyre on his LCR Honda which was completely destroyed after the 24-lap race and he said: “It was embarrassing being lapped.

“Most of the tyre is laid down around the circuit. The rear just ate itself. I did 12 laps on it in the morning and it was fine but it was like an experimental tyre.

“Dunlop told me even if the temperature comes up it would work even better and it was my final decision to run it. I was convinced but after six laps it was dangerous and coming round on me on the entry to corners.

“This was a big lesson learned and from now on I’ll use the majority choice of the other riders. Ratthapark Wilairot did a 1:43.5 on his last lap while I was a lap down and struggling to stay on. It was my decision to run the tyre but I am learning.”
