Dorna boss shrugs off 600cc conflict

MotoGP boss Carmelo Ezpeleta has denied a new 600cc four-stroke class to replace the 250GP series in 2011 will cause conflict with World Superbike bosses.

Despite fears that a new 600cc class would clash with the World Supersport series run by FG Sport, the Motorcycle Sport Manufacturers Association proposed 600cc to replace 250s last weekend in Catalunya.

To avoid any clash, Ezpeleta’s initial displacement proposal was for engines between 625 and 650cc, but he believes the 600cc category is viable because his series will feature prototypes, unlike the production based World Supersport series.

The issue is a major concern for the FIM – motorcycling racing’s governing body. It has to sanction any world championship class, and bosses had already asked MotoGP to avoid proposing 600cc to steer clear of problems with FG Sport.

But Ezpeleta said: “I don’t have any worry about my contract or the FIM contract with Flammini. I know my contract and my contract allows me to make any race, which is protoype.

“We don’t want any conflict. I am concentrating on what is the most important thing to develop my championship. The rest doesn’t matter to me.”
