Loris Capirossi ruled out of Japanese Grand Prix

Loris Capirossi will miss next weekend’s Japanese MotoGP race at the Twin Ring Motegi after suffering a dislocated right shoulder during Sunday’s Motorland Aragon round in Spain.

After initial consultations with doctors in Monaco, Capirossi was advised to undergo immediate surgery on the right shoulder, which he also dislocated during the Dutch TT weekend at Assen in late June.

The recovery period from the surgery would have been three months, meaning the Pramac Ducati’s long career would have ended in a Motorland Aragon gravel trap after he confirmed earlier this month he will retire at the end of the season.

Capirossi though will delay surgery having held further talks with MotoGP Doctor Claudio Costa, and the 38-year-old now plans to return for the Australian round at Phillip Island on October 16.

Capirossi said: “I wanted to race in Japan. It is one of my favourite tracks where I have achieved many good results and much satisfaction, but the doctors were more than clear.

“After an initial consultation in Monaco, where it was recommended I immediately undergo surgery, which would have meant three months out and the end of my career, I went to Imola to see Dr. Costa. He is used to seeing other riders in these conditions, and I thought he might have other ideas.

“Unfortunately, he was also quite hard about it, and I was strongly advised not to take part in the Japanese race. My shoulder hurts, and it will take at least two weeks of full rest plus a week of rehabilitation.

“I regret this very much, but I think this is the best choice for ending my season, and my career, in the best way possible for the last three races in Australia, Malaysia and Valencia.”

Capirossi announced in Misano earlier this month he will retire after 22 years in Grand Prix racing.
