Assen MotoGP: Marquez takes Moto2 win

1 of 1

Suter rider Marc Marquez has extended his championship lead with victory in the Moto2 race at Assen after two of his championship rivals failed to score points.

Fellow Spaniard Pol Espargaro – who was just six points behind Marquez going in to today’s race – crashed out of the lead on only the second lap, leaving his bike in pieces.

On the opening lap Thomas Luthi got tangled up with Thai rider Ratthapark Wilairot and was unable to finish the race. Wilairot was able to continue, but crashed out later on in the race.

With Espargaro out of the race Andrea Iannone was able to stretch out a lead ahead of Marquez and Scott Redding who were battling for second.

Iannone stretched out his lead to over two seconds, before Marquez was able to pass Redding and make it stick, after a tremendous battle.

With clear track Marquez was able to catch Iannone, making his decisive move on the final lap to take victory. Iannone moves up to second in the championship, with Espargaro in third, 31 points behind Marquez.
