Scott Redding: Strategy is just to beat Espargaro

Scott Redding says his only strategy for the remainder of the 2013 Moto2 world championship will be to finish ahead of Pol Espargaro in what is sure to be a tense and dramatic final six races.

A stunning victory in his home round at Silverstone earlier this month moved the Marc VDS Racing rider a massive 38-points clear of closest rival Espargaro, who could only finish in a lowly eighth at the British Grand Prix.

Redding has now won three races in 2013 and is edging closer to history by becoming Britain’s first GP world champion since Barry Sheene in 1977.

Speaking exclusively to MCN, the 20-year-old said: “Strategies are always a good theory but they very rarely work. As long as I can be in front of Pol at the flag then I am happy with my weekend. The goal is to stay in front of Pol and keep an eye on (Esteve) Rabat because he is coming quite strong now. My target is to win a couple more races but the main thing is to finish in front of Pol and get the championship.”

The crucial final third of the season kicks off this weekend in Misano and Redding added: “The only place I don’t really like is Valencia but that’s more because I am bored of it having done so many laps there in testing. If I can wrap up the championship before then that’s perfect. But if not we’ll do our best to get the title.”
