Moto2 title contender Mika Kallio could be heading for a surprise return to the MotoGP world championship in 2015.

Aprilia and Aspar Honda have approached the Finn, who dominated Sunday’s Indianapolis Moto2 clash, about a premier class switch in 2015.

Aprilia is making a factory return to MotoGP next year and has been linked with a host of names including Marco Melandri, Eugene Laverty and Alvaro Bautista.

Kallio also features on Aprilia’s shortlist and is seriously interested in the Noale factory’s new 1000cc project, which features a pneumatic valve motor and seamless shift gearbox.

The Marc VDS Racing rider told MCN: “I know in the first year when you come with a new bike it is always mainly for testing and development but I think with my experience I could be good for them. I like the technical side of the sport and that’s why it is interesting for me.

“If they are interested it has to be at least for two or three years and then you can make development and see the progress. I need to see where I am on the list but it is not a secret that when I came back to Moto2 the main goal has always been to go back to MotoGP. I have been looking for some options but there has never been a good one and maybe this year there are some interesting possibilities.”

Kallio, who last raced in MotoGP for Pramac Ducati in 2010, is also exploring the potential Aspar Honda opening given that HRC will significantly upgrade the performance of the RCV1000R production racer next year.

Kallio added: “When I heard about the new bike Honda will have, this makes it very interesting. I believe the bike will be on a completely different level and it is a good option. But everything is open.

“Even if I stay in Moto2 it is not bad because Marc VDS is a really good option and it would be a little bit sad to leave because the atmosphere is so good and I always like to work with them. Whatever happens it will be a difficult decision.”

Kallio’s third win of the season in America last Sunday slashed Marc VDS Racing teammate Tito Rabat’s championship advantage to just seven points.
