Rossi and Marquez serve up a classic!

1 of 1

Valentino Rossi took the 111th win of his career after a superbly judged fight with Marc Marquez for the win. The duo were in a class of their own but when Rossi moved past with three laps to go there was nothing that his rival could do about it with Rossi able to set a personal best on the penultimate lap of the race but as usual at Assen it came down to the last chicane and while Marquez dived down the inside Rossi defended the position but was forced to run through the gravel trap en route to the chequered flag.

It was Rossi’s first win from pole position since 2009 and it extended his title lead to ten points over Jorge Lorenzo who recovered to third at the flag after starting eighth. Cal Crutchlow was piped to the top satellite honours by Pol Espargaro by one tenth of a second with Bradley Smith a similar distance behind his compatriot.
