Moto2: Morbidelli tops red flagged qualifying at Assen

Moto2 championship favourite Franco Morbidelli has came out on top of a red flagged and restarted moto2 qualifying session at the Dutch TT, finishing top of the times after a horrific crash for Lorenzo Baldassarri brought the session to a halt in the opening minutes.

The Forward Racing rider suffered a huge highside at turn fifteen, falling heavily and instantly rendering himself unconscious – but is reported to have no serious injuries bar a concussion after being evacuated to a local hospital for CT scans.

And when the wet session got back underway it was Morbidelli who took control, eventually finishing a tenth of a second head of fellow 2018 MotoGP graduate Takaaki Nakagami, with Thomas Luthi rounding out the front row of the grid for tomorrow’s race.

Miguel Olivera was fourth on the KTM machine, leading Fabio Quartararo and Xavier Simeon, while the third row was comprised of Mattia Pasini, Alex Marquez and Marcel Schrotter. Axel Pons rounded out the top ten.

The only Brit in the class Tarran Mackenzie came home in 30th after a heavy crash during the session, despite running as high as 13th during the weekend’s wet sessions.
