Alex Marquez has hit back at Marc VDS Moto2 teammate Franco Morbidelli on the Italian’s home soil to end the opening day of Moto2 action at the Italian Grand Prix on top, after Morbidelli finished ahead in the day’s opening free practice one session.

Championship leader Morbidelli ended the day in third, after a late lap from fellow title rivals Takaaki Nakagami made it through on him as well, with 0.3 covering the top three after the first day of action.

Veteran Italians Mattia Pasini and Simone Corsi gave the home crowd more to cheer about as they completed the top five, ahead of a familiar name as the fastest rookie was once again Sky Racing Team VR46 rider Francesco Bagnaia.

Brad Binder made his return to the Moto2 fold in style as he came back from a recurring arm injury to take seventh on Friday, just ahead of teammate Miguel Oliveira and well inside the top ten. Championship challenger Tom was ninth fastest, with Lorenzo Baldassarri completing the top ten after fighting for the win last year.
