MotoGP: Rossi wins as Iannone torpedoes Lorenzo!

1 of 1

Valentino Rossi had taken a stunning victory this afternoon at Barcelona’s Montmelò circuit to get his 2016 MotoGP title aspirations back on track. The Italian spent most of the race dicing with title rival Marc Marquez, before pulling the pin with two laps to go to win comfortably.

And not all the drama was at the front, as Andrea Iannone once again influenced the championship battle by torpedoing championship leader Jorge Lorenzo out of the race. Lorenzo led in the early stages, but dropped back – opening the door to an impossible move from the Italian that left both of them in the gravel.

Dani Pedrosa was able to triumph over Maverick Viñales for the final podium spot, while Pol Espargaró rode to an excellent fifth as top independent, just ahead of another excellent result from Cal Crutchlow in sixth.

Eugene Laverty continued his points-scoring streak to finish 13th, while it was a disaster for both Scott Redding in last and Bradley Smith in the garage with a technical problem, a fate shared by Aleix Espargaró.
