Tommy Hill will start from pole position for the Silverstone round of the World Superbike championship after a superpole lap of 1:38.001 on the Virgin Yamaha.

He’ll head the grid from championship leader Troy Bayliss, who lapped in 1:38.254, and British favourite Chris Walker, who put in a 1:38.265 lap on the Kawasaki ZX-10R.

Hill set a series of fastest laps to take the pole but trying to go even faster he crashed and had to walk back to the pits.

As he strolled down pit lane he was clapped all the way and congratulated by race director Stuart Higgs.

At the press conference he said: ” I can’t beleive I’m standing on this stage next to Troy Bayliss… and I’m faster than him.”

Noriyuki Haga is fourth quickest, Michel Fabrizio fifth, and Alex Barros sixth. James Toseland has qualified in a disapointing 14th place, three seconds off the time of Hill.

Afternoon practice: Michel Fabrizio has gone fastest in the afternoon practice session at a wet Silverstone. In the morning qualifying session, many riders elected to remain in their garages to avoid the risk of a crash, with the first qualifying session giving us 16 riders for Superpole. But almost all the field returned to the track for the afternoon practice, with Fabrizio posting a time of 1:40.859, from Alex Barros with 1:41.622, and new face Josh Brookes with 1:41.951. Wildcard Tommy Hill has cheered British fans by going fourth fastest in practice with 1:42.073, ahead of Corser, Haga, Lanzi, Bayliss, Nannelli and Walker. James Toseland is 11th.

The grids for all three support classes have been decided by the first qualifying sessions due to the bad weather slowing times in second qualifying.

In World Supersport, that’s good news for Sebastien Charpentier, Kevin Curtain, Broc Parkes and Pere Riba, who will be the first four on the grid. But Stuart Easton and Tom Tunstall have lost out, despite running 11th and 13th in Saturday practice, as they will now start from 25th and 36th. Stephen Neate will start 21st, and Sam Owens will be 31st.

In Superstock 1000 it’s six Italians at the front of the grid with Claudio Corti on pole. Guy Sanders is in ninth, Richadr Cooper 18th and Howie Manwaring in 22nd.

In Superstock 600 it’s Niccolo Canepa on pole. Barry Burrell is seventh, Greg Black is 22nd, Matt Bond 23rd, and Chris Northover 29th.

Saturday morning sessions

Due to rain at Silverstone, many riders sat out the second qualifying session. Absent riders include Troy Bayliss, who is fastest from the first session, James Toseland and Karl Muggeridge, Sebastien Gimbert, wild card Tommy Hill and the Foggy Petronas riders Craig Jones and Steve Martin.

Of the riders that did venture onto the circuit, Troy Corser set the fastest time of 1:45.726 on the Alstare Corona Suzuki, from Alex Barros on the Klaffi Honda with 1:45.802. Noriyuki Haga was third quickest with 1:46.090. Britain’s Chris Walker did venture out onto the circuit with a best time of 1:58.930. In World Supersport free practice, Matthieu Lagrive has gone fastest, completing 15 laps on the Klaffi Honda with a best time of 1:37.673, ahead of fellow Honda riders Gregory Lablanc for Vazy Racing, and Kenan Sofuoglu for WInston Ten Kate. Brits Stuart Easton and Tom Tunstall have gone 11th and 13th quickest, with Sam Owens 19th, and Stephen Neate 23rd. In Superstock 1000 free practice it’s an Italian affair with Claudio Corti recording 1:30.297, ahead of the two MV Agustas of Ayrton Baldovini and Luca Scassa. With Italians taking seven of the top ten times, the op Brit was Guy Sanders in eighth. Richard Cooper went 17th quickest, with Howie Manwaring 23rd. To see the full timesheet, click here.
