Spies targets home double at Miller

Ben Spies enters the seventh round of the World Superbike championship in confident mood with the clear aim of leaving his home race with the double win. The 25 year old American has an impressive record at the Miller Motorsports track in Salt Lake City having won five out of his last six races in AMA at the circuit.
Having struggled to match the pace of the factory Ducati’s of Noriyuki Haga and Michel Fabrizio last time out in Kyalami, Spies believes the layout and the high grip tarmac at Miller will suit his Yamaha R1 perfectly.
Speaking to MCN he said:
“This circuit is kind of like Qatar and our bike worked well there. I’ve always gone well at this track even though it’s not necessarily a track where I feel I’m especially fast. The layout should suit our bike well and right now I feel that if I don’t win it will be down to me, not the bike.”
Spies currently sits in third position in the championship standings 88 points behind runaway leader Noriyuki Haga. With such a points deficit Spies knows that he needs to start winning races consistently and is also hoping more riders can begin to challenge at the front of the field.
He said:
“I’d like to see five or six guys in the lead group this weekend. Nori is riding really well and even if I can win, if he’s in second that’s no good to me. I want more riders battling up front, hopefully I can be there too.”
