Portimao WSB: Spies hoping for toe to toe battle with Haga to decide title

American WSB sensation Ben Spies is hoping for a good clean race with Noriyuki Haga on Sunday to decide who will be crowned 2009 World Champion.

With just ten points separating the two men, Spies wants the battle at the front to be between the two of them, but with the early pace shown by Jonathan Rea, Michel Fabrizio and Max Biaggi that looks an increasingly unlikely proposition.

Speaking to MCN, Spies said: “All I hope for is that myself and Haga both get good starts, we stay out of trouble and we settle it between us. If that happens then I think I’ve got a really good chance.

“If we can get the hole shot and the two of us jump out to a two second lead, that would be perfect. That way we’ll have as good a shot as Nori to win it without any other scenario entering the equation.

“At the end of the day it’s racing and there are going to be people running you wide, so all I can do is try and stay out of trouble.”
