World Superbike series leader Ben Spies has admitted that this weekends Imola showdown is pivotal point in his title aspirations and the result will play a major part in how he rides in the final two rounds of the series.

The 25 year old American currently leads Xerox Ducati man Noriyuki Haga by 18 points with six races and 150 points still available.

Speaking at Imola Spies said:

“It’s crunch time and it’s time to get down to business. I’ve come back from over 80 points behind and now we’re leading which means I can come to Imola feeling more comfortable knowing that we’ve got a bit of leeway.”

Spies enjoyed a successful two day test at the Italian circuit in July where he finished third fastest and has an advantage over Haga who did not compete in the test due to the injuries he sustained at the Donington Park race.

Spies said:

“With three rounds still to go I know that I can’t win the title this weekend, but I could lose it.

“We had a good test here in the summer and I’m confident with the bike. My aim is to ride hard in both races and see where we end up.

“The results this weekend will dictate how I will ride in the last four races.”
