Bargain Hunter | My go-to bike wash is on discount, plus great deals on alternatives

Cleaning your bike on a regular basis not only keeps it looking showroom shiny, but will also protect it in the long run too. Leave bug splat, bird poop or road salt unattended for too long and it can easily mark paintwork or damage delicate surfaces like screen and headlights, with the latter of the three being particularly damaging to alloy components like radiators, coolers and engine casings.

It also gives you the perfect opportunity to get up close and personal for an in-depth inspection while you’re at it, where you might just spot something like a loose fastener, oil leak or tyre damage before it becomes a problem. Having a decent cleaner is one thing, but like any job you’ll need a range of tools to get the job done properly.

Last week’s bargains

The great British summer is almost upon us, and that means changeable weather to challenge even the most clairvoyant among us. Working out what to wear can leave you packing panniers with waterproofs and thermals just in case, but kit yourself out in some touring textiles and you’ll be ready for whatever the climate can chuck at you.

A laminated outer, drop liner or removable layer should it rain, detachable thermal inner for chilly and windy days, plus plenty of vents to open when the sun does finally shine, and you’ll be ready for anything.
And you don’t need to compromise on protection, as all the jackets I’ve rounded up here are CE certified with a minimum of shoulder and elbow armour.
