The ECE 22.06-rated Shoei NXR2 is among the most popular helmet reviews on the MCN website recently because there have been some fantastic deals on this sports-touring lid, with some designs up to 45% cheaper than when they were launched.

That’s not the case with the one you can see here, though, which is finished in Capriccio TC5; a new design and one of 23 currently on offer.

But despite the differing price levels in the range, from £399.99 to £519.99, all come with a wide range of sizes.

How comfortable is the Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet?

Furthermore it’s a fantastic fit for me. There are a lot of sizing options available, including five outer shell sizes and cheek pads in four thicknesses, which means it’s worth getting this lid fitted properly at a shop rather than buying blind online.

The strap is secured using a double D-ring just like the MotoGP stars use, and while I’ve tried other systems, nothing offers the same simplicity. I’m able to use a single gloved hand to fasten the chinstrap, and a popper means there’s no tail flapping around once I’ve done so.

Should the worst happen, there’s also an Emergency Quick Release System on board that allows the lid to be removed in moments for urgent medical care.

Is the visor of the Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet any good?

The visor is easy to operate even with gloved hands. It’s a solid movement that doesn’t distract you as you ride. A CWR-F2 Pinlock keeps fogging at bay, and once I’d learnt to use the vents properly this worked faultlessly. An early session at Brands Hatch in biblical rain did have me looking for the demister spray, but I’ve never needed it since.

Does the Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet have good ventilation?

It’s versatile in terms of venting too, which has been great for me because I’ve ridden in all manner of conditions, from frosty drizzle to 40-degree-plus heat. There are six inlets on the brow and chin, feeding to four outlets on the rear, allowing you to adjust the airflow for the situation at hand.

Is the Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet quiet?

But as well as the looks, aero features make this among the quietest helmets I’ve tried when travelling at speed. I’ve been north of 120mph several times this year on race tracks, and it’s been brilliant under those conditions. It’s only ever really loud when you turn your head out of the normal airflow – for example looking over your shoulder.

If you’re after an intercom to use with this helmet, we’d suggest the Shoei Sena unit is the way forwards.

How does the Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet look?

Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet

This one’s finished in Capriccio TC5 and it’s quite ‘under the radar’. I think it’s a great look, somehow managing to tread the fine line between subtle and stylish, with an aerodynamic twist thanks to the integrated spoiler. The darker colours do tend to hide the neat detailing, though.

Is the Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet good quality?

When you’re adjusting the vents or indeed operating the visor, you get a real sense of quality in terms of the solidity of the materials and the way they all work together. Inside the shell, the removable liners snap into place with poppers that feel very strong, unlike a lot of cheaper helmets I’ve tested.

Is the Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet good value for money?

This lid is from the more expensive end of the market, and while there are discounts available at plenty of online retailers, it’s still going to smart a bit when you hand your card details over.

With that in mind, it has an impressive list of rivals. Other helmets to consider, and crucially to try on for size/fitment, include the Arai Quantic, Nexx X.WST3 Carbon, Simpson Venom and HJC RPHA 12.

Shoei NXR2 TC-10 helmet – the bottom line

Sure, it’s not a cheap lid, but if this design is too expensive there are simpler solid colours on offer starting at a hundred quid less.

And to top it all off, this lid comes with a five-year warranty for additional peace of mind. I’ve been really impressed by this helmet, so if you’ve got a ‘Shoei head’ then why not take one for a test fit?
