A huge discount on this ever-popular camping chair, known for being sturdy, comfortable, and easy to carry. Essential for relaxing with a cuppa after the tent is up.

A decent tent is perhaps the most important bit of kit, as it will be your main shelter from the elements. While many hard-core motorcycle campers like tents that sleep one person and are little larger than a sleeping bag, we would favour something with some space to allow you to get out of, and store, wet gear and relax for an evening.

So we'd go for something like this two-person dome tent (for stability) from Coleman – a brand with huge heritage in camping. There's a compact version with no porch area (1.4kg lighter), but we like the space to store and dry kit.

Even if you don't wear earplugs to ride (you definitely should, by the way), you'll need them when hundreds of decibels of straight-through race exhaust is screaming past your head.

Tested by Ben Clarke

"Loop have become well-known for their noise-reducing ear plugs that come in a huge variety of colours and with differing amounts of attenuation depending on the model.

"The recommended option for bikers is the Experience, which offers a 17dB noise cut to protect your hearing while letting you hear the traffic around you and your own engine sound.

"I've been using Loop products for years and these latest are from the Sublime range released for autumn/winter 2024. The colour options are intended to evoke memories or the late nineties, but the plugs themselves are just the same as the standard Experience 2s.

"The Loops are instantly comfortable and having worn them on and off for around six hours on that first afternoon, I can say that they remain comfortable for extended periods. It’s great to be able to hear other traffic around you clearly from a safety perspective, but I also noticed I could hear the engines of the bikes I was riding better (which is always good) and also found it easier to speak with colleagues without taking my helmet off on work rides.

"It’s always great when a product does what it promises and these ear plugs from Loop really fit that description. It’s a simple idea executed perfectly with great attention to detail and design touches."

Never run out of puff again trying to blow up the mattress. Smaller than a can of Coke, it also lets the air out when you’re breaking down camp.

Tried and Tested by Ben Clarke for 12 months:

“I’ve used this tent for a few bike trips now and it’s become a trusty part of my touring kit. It’s really quick and easy to pitch and has enough room inside to house me and my gear for a night under canvas.
“I took the Banshee on a summer sportsbike tour and encountered everything from baked solid pitches that were tricky for the tent pegs, through to pitching it by headlight in torrential Spanish rain and it coped with it all.
“It stayed watertight through the rainy evenings, too, and never showed any signs of struggling in strong winds.
“If you are adventure bike touring and carrying everything but the kitchen sink, then a bigger option would be advisable but my two-piece leathers, helmet, boots and Kreiga luggage set all fitted inside with me – just.
“It’s also too small really to change inside, although it’s possible if you can slip in and out of your kit lying down. More regular tourers might find this getting tedious over time.”

Vango is one of the most well-respected names in tents and outdoor equipment. This tunnel tent is classed as two-person, though for motorcyclists it's often more appropriate for one person with some gear.

This kit from Gear Gremlin includes everything you need to repair and re-inflate a punctured tyre in a handy carry case. The CO2 canisters can be purchased separately, too.

Tested by Jim Blackstock:

"There are two main ways to get going again if you have a puncture – this or a can of spray-in tyre repair. But the latter makes a horrendous mess and many professionals may not entertain carrying out a permanent repair afterwards.

"You can use the Gear Gremlin motorcycle tyre repair kit up to five times before getting more worms. That's as long as the hole is smaller than the specified 6mm maximum. Also assuming you have some way of re-inflating the tyre, like a small rechargeable compressor or additional canisters of gas. But it’s small enough to take with you on any major ride."

How MCN tests trackside, travel and camping essentials

Each of our writers has an in-depth understanding of the needs of bikers… because we are one. We regularly test and review all motorcycle kit, including travel and camping essentials.

Many of the items on this page haven’t been reviewed yet, but we’ve included them because we feel they have a good spec for the price and we would spend our own money on them. Where we have tested kit, our writers use it in the real world while we rack up thousands of test miles per year and during trips on our own bikes, too.

To find out more, head to our dedicated page explaining how we test motorcycle products.

What our star ratings mean

When we review a product, we award it a score out of five. In the ratings tab of a given product, you may also find more specific scores for the different aspects of a product’s performance to help you make an informed decision. Here’s a guide to what each number score means:

  • 1 star – Poor performance in this category or overall. A product with a single star rating has fallen below the expected standard and should be avoided.
  • 2 stars – Basic performance in this area or overall. A product with a two-star rating has managed to perform to a barely acceptable level and there is room for improvement.
  • 3 stars – An average performance in this area or overall. A product with a three-star rating has achieved a basic level of performance and is deemed adequate.
  • 4 stars – A product has performed over and above the accepted averaged in this category or overall. A product with a four-star rating has surpassed expectation and delivered in a particularly impressive way.
  • 5 stars – A product has performed at the highest possible level in a particular category or overall. A product with a five-star rating has delivered to the highest possible level, impressing the tester with its performance. We would happily spend our own money on it.
