The BMW S1000XR has been a consistent MCN 'sports adventure' group test winner from the beginning, sitting neatly in between the relaxed Ducati Multistrada 1200/1260 and bonkers KTM's 1290 Super Duke GT. A eniable mix of feisty S1000RR and classy R1200GS/R1250GS, it's no wonder the end result is brilliant.

It's upright, practical and comfortable with RR-like speed, handling and braking performance. Add in typical BMW style, build quality and a bewildering amount of optinal goodies to make your day, safer and more comfortable and you've got yourself a formidable all-rounder. 

Updated in 2017 for Euro 4, BMW gave the XR an extra 5bhp, new handlebars to tackle the vibes and a beefed-up the subframe to take an extra 10kg - all subtle changes, which didn't add up to a big difference in the real world. What we'd really like to see now is an XR version of the brilliant 2019 S1000RR...now that would be very special indeed.

The XR has the same basic configuration as the S1000R & RR - a twin beam aluminium perimeter frame with cast aluminium double-sided swing-arm, but both are all-new to deliver different geometry.

The steering head angle is 0.8º shallower than the S1000R with 18.5mm more trail while the swing-arm is 65mm longer to give a wheelbase of 1548mm, 109mm more than the S1000R, all to improve traction and stability. While the suspension is 30 and 20mm longer travel front and rear. There’s also a steering damper fitted under the ‘beak'.

It doesn’t just go like a superbike, it handles and stops like one, too, but it isn’t as stiff or flighty so even on the bumpiest of backroads it doesn’t tie itself in knots. It just glides on its semi-active Sachs suspension as you sit back and admire its easy composure and distance-crushing speed. 

In June 2019 we were given the chance to test the XR again during the launch of Pirelli's latest Angel GT II tyre and have updated this review accordingly.

With a motor lifted from the German firm’s RR superbike and retuned for more mid-range grunt, the 999cc masterful motor gurgles on the overrun, pops and bangs through its gearbox blippers and goes like merry hell. It’s a four-cylinder cacophony of noise, aggression and power when you poke it with a stick, but relaxed and tractable when you’re just cruising and watching the world waft gently by. 

Undergoing the Euro 4 treatment in 2017 with a new exhaust and mapping, BMW also added an extra 5bhp, bringing claimed power up to a tasty 163bhp and rubber mounted bars to banish engine vibes, but those tingles are still there. They bother some riders more than others, but it’s a small blot on the Beemer’s otherwise blemish-free copybook.

Again, it’s a BMW so there should be little to worry about. Quality is definitely up there with the best and, while it’s too earlier to be 100% sure about reliability, there have been few problems with the R and RR on which the XR is mostly based.

On top of that, BMW has an enviable ‘dealer experience’ and reknown for fastidiously looking after customers in the event of an recall issues and you can’t really ask for much more than that.

It isn’t cheap, whichever way you slice at it, especially when you've added lots of tasty extras, but it's one of the best all-rounders money can buy, mixing superbike performance with comfort and practicality.

Being a BMW, a bewildering variety of options and accessories are available in different 'packs'. The standard version gets two rider modes, ABS, and two-way adjustable screen, but options include extra riding modes, quickshifter/blipper, traction amd cruise control, heated grips, semi-active electronic suspension, an onboard computer, centre srtand, and luggage. For best residuals, the blingier the better.

Does your BMW S1000XR have vibrating bars?

In order to address this known issue with the XR's bars vibrating too badly, aftermarket firm Cymarc have sought to remedy the problem with their aftermarket bar ends.

The steel powder-coated bar ends weigh 270g each and are designed specifically to soak up the vibes on the XR. The fasteners are made from stainless steel.

The bar ends cost £39 a pair and are easy to fit, with no need for specialist tools or knowledge.

The ride is great, and with the semi active suspension, makes riding on British roads enjoyable. The brakes are by far one of the best I've experienced on a bike.

I bought a 2016 XR and had it for 5 months. Putting about 2300 miles on it, with a total of about 10700 miles on the clock. I was was on a ride and it went bang. Took it to a garage and found that the cam shaft lobe had worn down, and failed causing the valve to smash into the piston. This has resulted in the engine being a total loss. Spoke with BMW and a number of other persons who own XRs, and have been told this is a common problem with the emailer models. So if you are in the market for an XR, be mindful if you hear a ticking noise.

Brakes are amazing, 0 complaints, stop like a truck and the ABS systems are crazy good. They can only be overwhelmed if you're being an absolute ape. Cornering ABS is straight up magic in emergency situations, and if you know how to use the electronics to your advantage (not rely on them, but use them) there is nothing on the road that can touch this bike under braking. Suspension features are also top notch, the electronic features are a game changer, anti dive is amazing, anti squat shoots you off like a rocket, handling razor sharp, electronic preload makes setting up the bike or just changing firmness for rougher terrain a 5 second job, however actual damping quality is not amazing. The electronics do a lot to cover the weaknesses of the base suspension to the point where it becomes a non issue, but without the electronics working this is a midrange suspension at best, the sort you'd find on something like a Versys 650 or SV650. Even on softest settings it's a little hard but not unbearable.

Tremendous engine, loads of power, loads of torque, dead smooth when under load, it's only jittery at very low speeds when the engine is not under load (ie rolling down a slight hill). Yes the engine is buzzy, nowhere near to the extent people make it out to be. I thought it was bad only because I was told so and I've been paying attention to it, then I rode a Multistrada 1260, CB650R, Street Triple 765RS, my old ER6F and all of them vibrated at least the same if not more. Gears are short but that really works for this bike especially paired with the sublime quickshifter.

Reliability is extremely good over 40,000 miles hasn't missed a beat that wasn't my fault breaking something (eg water getting under grips when replacing them and heated grips corroding, literally a 20 minute, 2 quid fix with some new heating element wire and a soldering iron). Build quality is really good on all the parts that matter. Mechanical components seem to have endless life and show no signs of age, as far as the smaller details go it gets a bit worse, fairings are a bit creaky, handguards a bit flimsy (not a problem even at high speed), some places have annoying gaps in them and the windscreen assembly is also a bit bendy, none of these affect riding experience though.

My annual running cost is factored in doing 15k miles a year. People who say this bike is expensive to run are speaking absolute bollocks. If you are silly enough to take the bike to a main dealer then you deserve to pay what the charge, and even that price is not unreasonable (200 quid for a full service).Any independent mechanic will halve the service costs BMW offer, especially at the bigger jobs, do it yourself it's, spare change. £45-50 for an oil change, one of the easiest bikes to do it on too, £20 for an air filter, valves service is just a couple hours and maybe £20-30 in shims if any needs replacing. Chain and sprockets slightly more than the average bike at £120, not because "it's a BMW", purely because this bike has a long chain, same with pads, which are around £70-80 for a full set, and discs... I was surprised to see a pair of upgrade Brembo discs (£320) on this bike are cheaper than replacement EBCs on my Kawasaki ER6!!! As for outright brand new value, it's not exactly relevant anymore but just last year the fully loaded Gen 2 S1000XR was £16500 OTR, equivalent Kawasaki Versys 1000 was £15500. Trust me when I say this bike has more than a 1000 quid on the Kawi... Then on the other end 1290 SD GT was around £18k and the Ducati nearly £20k. This makes the XR not only the highest performing in the category, but also the most well equipped and therefore best value.

Extremely well equipped bike, it has everything apart from some of the latest toys such as radar cruise control or blind spot detection. The selection and options for the electronics are simple but the electronics themselves are the most sophisticated there is on the market. Slip control is intelligent, keeps the bike dead steady, wheelie control gives you freedom in Dynamic but keeps you firmly planted in Road, the riding modes themselves are very well tuned to suit multiple riding situations and i don't see the need to fettle with them any more. If I would miss one thing it's adjustable engine braking.

Really good all round bike. I was considering a sports bike but put off by the riding position. This bike is fantastic all round, I can commute to work, ride all day long or go for a fast blast in the country.

As you would expect BMW are not the cheapest to run, I have had it 2 years now and would welcome some sort of reduced cost value servicing for older bikes like the cars do or a good service plan offer.

The sat nav works really well with the bike, I opted for the GS lockable mount to service. The latest model does come with its own lovable mount. Luggage works really well too. Shame they don’t do there own radiator grills, had to purchase third ones as the roads are very exposed.

Really wanted this bike as the next after an ageing K1300S. Firstly, blown away by superb handling. A true wolf in sheep’s clothing. Looks like a tourer but handles like a GSXR1000. Lovely riding position giving a better view over cars I’m front for overtaking. It really is a great bike but, beware….. As a few hundred miles pass you start to get niggled. ‘That tiny vibration in the bars (like you’re holding on to a buzzing bee’ starts to make your fingers tingle. Then after an hour my little finger goes numb from it, then the next finger does the same foot pegs vibrate too. (search forums - omg, so many are like that) Heavy Evotech end weights help but do not fix fully. Then there is the jerkiness in traffic, like a fuel problem (another guy said his is like trying to hold a thoroughbred Stallion back at the start of a race and by god he is right) low speed riding (up to 30 mph) is horrid. Forums say they run lean due to euro4 emissions but quite frankly it’s a spoiler. It’s frankly jerky and unpleasant. Brand new plugs and power commander helps, but again doesn't resolve fully. The brilliant acceleration it great and road testers say the same but after a while you realise there is a cost, the gears are so close together that you're up and down the box (courtesy of a truly lovely up/down quick shifter) but the real negative is, it’s revving high. So 6th really should be 5th and so on. They’ve clearly built the bike for acceleration figures rather than real life living with it. I feel rather daft because I thought I researched this bike first and the mags say it’s brilliant. I couldn’t find many people faulting it. Then I searched the specific problems I’ve mentioned (and there are other faults too) and the internet and forums are littered with people having these same problems and BMW dealers pay lip service to them. Then there is the fuel pump air lock when hot on some bikes - wait an hour for it to cool down then it’ll restart. AA man said, soon as I got the call I knew what this fault was going to be. Seen this quite a bit! BMW fuel pump £450 plus fitting, but they are on back order sir, workshops booked for 6-8 weeks at the moment. (On eBay, patten part £108, delivered, fitted by myself all in 3 days) And finally, if you're in Kent, forget it. One BMW motorcycle dealer (merged with cars, which are their priority) with what appears to be one experienced motorcycle tech - yes Sir, we are booking in for service a repairs in 6-8 weeks. I’m not going to be a BMW bike owner for long - BMW you’re mad - 3 million people live in Kent and one dealer, maybe one technician- really! So, I’m moving on from BMW - too many issues, over priced parts, poor service backup.

It’s comfortable on long journeys, it’s quick and handles superbly when you want a dynamic ride. Could have fond with being a little lower as even at over 6 foot tall it is a challenge to get my leg over. Once in though it’s perfect, we’ll balanced and very light and easy to turn.

Want a tall, comfy sports bike? Look no further. Sit up, relax and enjoy the view on tour. Sit further back, bend your elbows, get over the tank and hang off on the bends - it will hustle round the track like you wouldn't believe. What else does it need to do to be the perfect all rounds. Ah....behaves in hot and heavy city traffic....job done.

Rode Aylesbury to Aberdeen with nothing more than fuel stops and arrived fresh as a daisy. Pretty impressive given the four seasons experienced on route.

100% 5 out of 5. Gentle as a gentle thing when if you're not looking for pace. Reach for the red line and change gear on the white light and it's a glorious beast with a sound track to match.

I'd really like to say 5 out of 5 but a catastophic oil cooler failure during warranty blotted the copy book over 5 years of ownership from new. Most of the engine oil, under pressure, got dumped over a 200m stretch of straight road leaving a hot exhaust induced cloud of white smoke which grabbed my attention before the next left hander. Silverlining? BMW stumped up for new rear tyre too. Only other none service component failure was a front wheel bearing after 20k miles.

Shift assist up and down is superb and on the way up at pace it adds to the sound track. Roadpilots make wet weather irrelevant. Avoid sports tyres unless you want to replace them with regular and totally un-necessary monotony.

Buying experience: Bought it new on a PCP deal from BMW North Oxford. Nice guys. At the end of the deal - bought the bike. By April 2022 I'll have owned my S1000XR for 6 years. Six years!!!! I have NEVER owned a bike that long. It's nuts.

For me this is the best street bike I’ve owned. It’s exceptionally comfortable. I could ride all day no problem. It’s really well balanced and loves a hack through the twisties. I have the fully loaded SE - slipper clutch, cruise control. I prefer to use the clutch from first to second as sometimes it jumps. Might just be me. The rest are seamless up and down. The brakes are exceptional. I’ve had to do some emergency braking and it has stopped and stayed planted. Gives me a lot of confidence

See above. Had some niggles but overall it’s reliable. The 18k service is a fiver shy of £800 so be prepared. It manages tyres well with its linked intelligent braking.

Love and recommend slipper clutch. Barely use cruise control, find it a bit fiddly. I have the pre mounted sat nav with thumb wheel. I changed my bars to Helibars for two reasons- 1 I prefer a slightly more aggressive angle and 2. The standard width of bars makes town filtering difficult (I work in London). The heated grips get way to hot for me. I use Gerbing gloves in winter. I’ve blinged it a bit further. Tail tidy, tinted screen. Shorty levers, crash bungs, exhaust. I use Michelin Road pilot 5. Love them.

Buying experience: Bought from Cannon BMW dealership. They are like part of my extended family. They also have a cafe.

The peg to seat height is high enough for my relatively small wife to enjoy much longer rides than on my previous bikes which included a Honda Super Blackbird. My only complaint is turbulence from the screen. When the weather is fine I take mine off and enjoy a beautiful smooth airflow.

Cruise control is fantastic, heated grips and quick shifter all brilliant. Wouldn’t bother with a aftermarket can as the standard one looks and sounds great. I always use Bridgestone battlaxe and have found them to be great. Also fitted a comfort seat from Bmw, the standard one is ok but this one looks better.

Buying experience: Bought from dealer, got a great deal from John Clark Aberdeen. Delivered to the door with no fuss. Was £11999 got it for 11350 delivered with warranty and low miles and one owner.

I absolutely love this bike, what I wanted was the closest bike to a BMW s1000rr I could get that I could get luggage on and tour on but still perform like a sports bike.. and it comes pretty close, infact on a lot or country roads and passes its better to ride !

The engine is fantastic for me ! It's very revy and that puts some people off but for me that's what makes the bike, it just wants you to push it more and that's when the engine is at its best !

It's been a great bike ( my second one) finish is good but I do clean it regularly and always garage it.. only problems I've had are 2 new fork legs ( both the oil side) slight pimple under the finish that has cut the fork seal.. had them replaced under warranty and also a new battery also under warranty.

With technology things are always improving so there is never a perfect bike its an evolution but I like the way that its heading, for me the most important things are the engine and gearbox, I love the gear assist and the auto blipper is fantastic, still amazes me that you can go all the way down the box without locking the back wheel ( unless you're unlucky enough to hit neutral between first and second, then it will lock the back wheel if you don't notice and knock it into first without the clutch, you don't do it many times before you know to use the clutch )

Buying experience: I've actually bought both of mine privately but it's great when you still get full dealer warranty and recovery.

This bike is a superb blend of bike characteristics in one. You want all day comfort? You’ve got it. You want a tractable engine that pulls smoothly from just about any revs? You’ve got it. Relaxed touring? It’s yours. Hang out with the latest sports bikes? No problem (and you won’t need a chiropractor at the end of your ride). Is it perfect? No! The gearing is too low, this engine produces more than enough power, if you need more you should be looking for a sponsor. So why, when you’re cruising at ‘legal’ speed limits it there a need for such high revs compared to other litre sized bikes? It makes it sound permanently angry...a bit like my missus. Another niggle which is really annoying is the clutch lever. Ok so this bike has a near seamless gear change on the move with its gear assist pro but you still need a clutch and the lever is non-adjustable! On a bike like this! Virtually everything has adjustable span levers but not this and I’m truly staggered, especially as the span requires me to take an initial grip to move it more comfortably into my proper grip - come on BMW what were you thinking? It is still one amazing machine with a lovely blend of comfort, performance and handling and despite its faults I still love it...a bit like my missus!

What can I say. This engine just purrs at low speed and will pull smoothly from just about anywhere in the rev range, as borne out by pulling away from a stand still in 3rd. Open the throttle properly and the exhaust just howls as it gives and keeps on giving more and more, the only niggle is the gearing is on the low side in my opinion and you’ll have a left foot like Michael Flattley changing gear trying to keep up with the rev light.

Mine has all the bells and whistles and it’s enough without being too much ( I had a multistrada before and there was too much to adjust on everything) so unless you’re riding competitively (probably not the ideal choice of bike then) you really don’t need more than this has for a great road set up for whatever situation- one up, two up, with luggage or not, fast riding, comfortable cruising- it’s all there.

Buying experience: Looked at two of these, one at Hester Motoraad the other at Superbike Factory both seemed totally indifferent to getting a sale. Great bike but both dealers lacked any customer service.

I have the HP seat on which I picked up on ebay, this in conjunction with seamless boxers and Rukka trousers with built in padding mean 500 miles days in comfort. Brakes are fantastic (I swapped to SBS Street pads) but in comfort mode trail braking into corners is best done with rear brake as front can make the front squirm.

Standard engine performance was already fantastic but I had it mapped (with the intention of getting it to run a little cooler as they tend to run lean and hot) and I have a dyno graph showing 166 bhp at the rear wheel. Pulls effortlessly in any gear and from 25mph in 6th. Normal spirited riding and touring very rarely gives below 47mgp. 220+ mile range touring.

Bought a 3 yr service plan from CMC for £500. First service in my ownership was 18k which included valve check so was v good vfm. Technician even videoed bike stripped down as proof that valves were checked.

Being the SE it has electronic suspension and cruise control as standard - both genuinely useful. The ar mounted selection wheel connected to the Nav 6 satnav is also useful. The electronics package abs, tc, anti wheelie is phenomenal to the point you don't really notice it working on the road. The true brilliance was noticed at an Anglesey track day where it embarrassed quite a few sports bikes and track machinery on Michelin Pilot Road 3s, even gained a compliment from Jamie Whitham after laying down big black lines at 125mph with a peg kissing the tarmac.

Buying experience: Bought from CMC Cannock and the sales process was pleasant, bike was cheapest on the Internet at the time. Decent px price for my MT10. The deal maker was the lifetime warranty offered by CMC with a cheap 3 year service plan the cherry on top. They even fitted a new pair of tyres and chain/sprocket set when all id asked for was new frt brake pads.

Quite how so many owners and reviewers overlook the issues which afflict this bike is beyond me. Maybe I've been unlucky, but I have tried other bikes and the same issues were there, so it wasn't just mine. The electronically adjustable suspension is woefully mismatched, with a hard as nails front, and bouncy castle rear. Scrolling through the settings makes only a marginal difference. The vibration through the bars is intrusive. Great engine, but how did BMW let this bike into the showrooms so massively under-geared? I hear for 2020 they are revising the suspension and gearing. Too late for me BMW. MCN consistently rate BMW reliability among the highest - try owning one

The brakes are very responsive and are first class with plenty of bite and feel. The major draw back with this bike is the horrendous vibration at motorway speeds. I work as a Police Motorcycle Instructor and have ridden many bikes and many BMWs and this has to be one of the worst vibrating BMWs that i have ever ridden.What make it worse is that the vibration is very apparent in 5th or 6th at 70mph. Bike is going back to dealer to see what can be done to address the problem. If the problem cannot be addressed then it will be bye bye. How a quality outfit like BMW can let a bike with this serious problem out to the general public is beyond me. I do not understand how this issue was not identified during testing. Would not advise anyone to purchase one ( and i am a big BMW Fan )

(Bonkers) Boris has now done 6000 miles with me including 4000 traveling to Greece and back. He is not inspiring of affection but I do respect his firepower. He has the ability to raise a smile with handling on anything from a mini roundabout to a hairpin. And a twist of the wrist with an open road ahead and the feel of all that grip (and technology) pushing and pulling me along makes me grin all over my face. I have only been riding bikes for 18 months so the XR is perhaps surprising but I wanted something that could do long trips, carry decent luggage, and absolutely wasn’t a GS because everyone has one of those and I like to be different. I also fell in love, or was that lust, with the engine after riding the S1000R. Apart from the inevitable weight, which is carried quite high on the XR and a tall stance which demands at least a 32” inside leg Boris is surprisingly well behaved around town. In Tirane, Albania, he did a fair impression of a scooter as we jousted with traffic in what was, at times, a surreal hazard awareness test. He has real road presence and great visibility through that adjustable screen. Overall it’s not a love affair more an arranged marriage which has blossomed into a pretty committed partnership with plenty of laughs along the way.

We have had to cope with everything from unmade roads through to immaculate and fast tarmac. The ride modes which can and should be adjusted for different conditions is really effective at limiting his feistiness when necessary. If you prefer more excitement the dynamic gives you the feeling of riding a semi wild pony. New Mecklam tyres have significantly improved handling I think.

At 3000rpm he growls like he is clearing his throat and waiting for something more interesting to happen. At 4000rpm in pretty much any gear he feels like you could set off from nothing, handle any corner, overtake anything, and the engine braking would get you back to planet earth quickly. At 5000rpm he is a bloody nuisance with the worst of the vibrations and buzz that everyone talks about. At 6000rpm he starts to shout his appreciation that life is suddenly getting more interesting. At 7500rpm the scenery starts to blur as the bike gets into its stride. Corners are a wonder of grip, noise and flashing rev light. On a straight I wussed out at 110 when the seemingly endless stretch of empty foreign motorway suddenly developed fast corners that hadn’t been visible seconds before. Needless to say I am fishing in the bottom end of the rev counter most of the time.

My bike came fully loaded. The cruise control is useful on long trips. The luggage is great size wise and I don’t find it hinders filtering. ABS has proved (very occasionally) useful. The technology does a fabulous job of flattering the rider.

Buying experience: My original BMW F800GT developed a fault and I was offered a Bonkers deal on this bike. The dealers are head and shoulders above other bike dealers who I have spoken to (but not purchased from).

The S1000XR is reliable and the cornering is superb making it easy to ride. The screen is useless for tall riders like me, so most riders will fit an aftermarket one. I repainted the panniers as the standard grey was not to my taste. Lowering kits are available for shorter riders. I've covered 4.5k miles so far since September with no issues. I'm considering upgrading the seat as 4hrs of riding gives me a numb bum. I leave mine in Dynamic mode regardless of weather. There is no vibration issue with this bike and I leave mine in 4th at around 5000 rpm for most road work up to 60mph. No chain adjustment required so far.

Electronic rider aids are amazing with the quickshift pro giving seamless gear changes. I purchased Evotech Performance handlebar weights to offset expected problems but they have not been noticeable. I suppose if you sit at 5000 reve all day then you may feel some vibes in which case, a Harley Davidson may be the bike for you!

Buying experience: Excellent BMW customer service. Deals worth shopping around for a deal if you are a cash buyer.

I've owned a X-Max 250, Black Bird, NC700, Z1000SX, Ducati MTS 1200 S, Rocket 3 Roadster, FZ1, Diavel, and finally by far the most comfortable, and exhilarating, and safe ride ever, the BMW S1000XR Sport SE, plus exceptional BMW Emergency, and Customer Service. Yes there is some vibration in the bars but Man up! Or use the cruise control! Most bikes have some vibration, my Z1000SX (a superb bike) was unbearable for my pillion and I after an hour on the road, the Rocket and Diavel ( also exceptional bikes) were the same on long journeys, maybe they just need breaking in. The BMW's competition Ducati MTS 1200S has the looks and the comfort for touring but the BMW S1000XR has the fun factor hands down, as well as comfort for touring.

The electrical components on the handle bars seem a bit flimsy, I had a flat tyre but was alerted by hazard warning lights on the dash, arrangements were made with BMW Emergency Services to collect and fix the tyre at my nearest dealer. My ECU packed up but thanks again to BMW's Emergency Service and excellent Customer Services, I was back on the road again. Thankfully its still under warranty, which can be extended/renewed on its anniversary date. This also includes the exceptional BMW Emergency Service.

Anyone put off buying an XR by reports of vibrations should not worry. This is a serious weapon. 2 up its quicker than my old gsxs1000. Out handles any bike I've ridden. Brakes are epic, the quick shifter and auto blipper are intoxicating. It has the ability to be comfortable for 300 miles+ in a day and extremely capable of a Sunday blast. Leaves you with the thought that you could have ridden faster and harder after every corner. Yes it does had a slight vibration at 5000 rpm but so what it's fantastic in all other areas.

I've had my XR for four months now and love it. It's without a doubt the best sports road bike you can buy. Talk about handle bar vibes are massively overblown. I think GS owners are riding this bike don't get it if you love your GS it's not the bike for you. It's a bike for sports bike riders who want more comfort and does it deliver, back roads and twistys are where it shines and you can ride it all day. The technology is awesome and easy to use, rider modes suspension set up on the move, quick shifter makes you feel like you're on a race bike so does the power, cruise control and heated grips add to the all day rideabilty. So if you want to cruise across continents no but if you want super bike performance you can ride all day YES.

I do not recommend this bike to anyone while BMW do not solve the problem with vibrations. It is quite impossible you ride more than 100 kms. without being regretful for your decision. Your hands will get damping due to the hard frequency of vibration after 4.000 rpm. The suspension is also hard and in long distances you feel very uncomfortable. Seems that BMW did not test properly before finishing this project and starting production of this bike. Very frustrated as I had the GS1200 and sold it to buy the S1000XR...

After various sportsbikes I went from a Gixxer Thou to a BMW S1000RR then onto the S1000XR. I loved my RR - incredible machine and by far the best sportsbike out there 2 years ago (don't know how the 2015 model compares to the new R1 and ZX10 etc). And I toured on it, found it absolutely fine cross Europe etc. However I couldn't take my wife on the back and thats what we want to do. So I tested the XR and was blown away. Got a great trade in on the RR so signed up for the XR. We have done a long weekend mini tour to visit family and have booked a tour to Spain next year - I love it for its sporty characteristics (its actually faster on normal UK roads IMO due to the low down grunt) and my wife is very comfortable on the back. So very happy. I considered a 1200 GSA, and would be tempted if I did more touring, however the teenager in me still needs something a bit sportier. Wildly reported vibration isn't an issue (all bikes vibrate!), comfort is great, wind protection is OK with the MRA Vario, speed is grin inducing, it has all the toys so very very happy overall.

I don't agree with the other reviews here that obsess over the bike's vibration. It was a bit distracting on mine at first but diminished significantly after the first 1000 miles. The 600 mile removal of the rev limiter helped with this as well. Yes there's still a bit there but I've never ridden a bike that wasn't a little vibe'e somewhere in its rev range and I don't even notice it on mine anymore. Much ado about nothing IMHO. Oh, and the brakes are fantastic. Takes the twists like a sport bike and can even handle modest off roading with grace. Out performs any liter bike I've ridden with the exception of the RR. The track is likely the only place you might want to push it harder. In the real world it rules.

Tame around town but will gladly rip your arms off when you want to misbehave. Great sound as well. Truly one of the best features of the bike.

Typical BMW pricing but a fully equipped bike that has every creature comfort I could want. I wish the panniers were color matched on the white bike as well, but size and functionality are great. Pretty much water tight through a couple of torrential storms.

A great A-road bike but not really a tourer - terrible vibration at cruising speed, undergeared, under-screened, with titchy panniers.

Brakes fantastic. Electronic suspension has been broken for most of my ownership so far (1000 miles)

Electronic suspension not working with warning light permanently on. Have had 600 mile service and this was reported as fixed by BMW but has come straight back on.

I had the lowered seat option and the full touring SE spec. The seat is comfortable for long trips and at 5'9" I can plant my feet flat easily. Panniers are tiny, very expensive, and useless. Top box, ordered with bike from BMW, has still not arrived. Bad wind noise and buffeting at cruising speed, so go for an after market screen option. BMW Navigator V coslty but makes sense if you opt for the handlebar control.

How this bike could have been reviewed with no mention of the horrendous vibrations is beyond me. Potential buyers should look at the owners forums before buying. A fantastic bike ruined by horrible vibrations and hard suspension. Buyers beware. Poster by a frustrated and disappointed owner.
