Derbi’s Terra Adventure 125 is a fantastic looking machine which bears more than a passing resemblance to the best selling BMW GS – albeit in a learner legal package. If you’re looking for adventure on a budget or just a small capacity bike to have some fun on you won’t be disappointed.

The Derbi Terra Adventure 125 showed its pedigree out in the wilds and handled the terrain perfectly. Great suspension front and rear, fantastic brakes (which stayed sharp despite our heavy abuse) and precise steering all added up to one of the best learner legal rides around. The saddle sits at 815mm but due to its narrow profile actually feels much lower, so riders of less than average height can manage the stylish 121kg bike.

Derbi’s Terra Adventure 125 has a four-stroke, liquid-cooled engine that kicks out a claimed 15hp and should be good for a little over 70mph. The Derbi Terra Adventure 125 may not have loads of power but it loves a handful of throttle and will happily rev to 11,500rpm.

Derbis have long been classier and better quality than most 125s – think Aprilia and you won’t be far wrong – and the Terra Adventure 125 is no different than most. Finish is generally good and, thanks largely to the Minerelli engine, there are noi reported reliability problems yet, either.

At around £3K, the Derbi Terra Adventure 125 is in the high-end category of learner bikes, but for the most part you get what you pay for. Besides, compared to other, bigger dual purpose bikes is that you don’t need a mortgage to own one. Find a Derbi Terra 125 for sale.

Equipment

4 out of 5 (4/5)

The Derbi Terra Adventure 125’s styling is well thought out, perfectly executed and also has a bash plate to protect that vulnerable engine whilst you’re living the dream out in the countryside. So, not only does the Derbi do the job, on or off road but it also looks the part and gives the appearance of a larger capacity bike. Compare and buy parts for the Terra 125 in the MCN Shop.

3 out of 5 Great little bike, As long as you like changing wheel bearings.

Not a bad little bike. Similar size to the Honda Varadero 125 but in my opinion looks way cooler.

Ride quality & brakes 4 out of 5

Definitely not a commuting bike. The engine has a severe lack of power below 7000rpm so in traffic you can be expecting a lot of revving and clutch slipping. The seat is comfortable enough however I do find myself having to push myself towards the back of the seat after putting my feet down to stop as you tend to end up squashed against the tank.

Engine 4 out of 5

Very nice engine but severely lacks power below 7000rpm and is also a very noisy engine. Most of the bike noise is produced by the engine, not the exhaust.

Reliability & build quality 2 out of 5

Quality is somewhat lacking. This bike was made for Spanish weather so the rain and salt in the UK has a pretty dramatic effect. You can expect most of the fasteners to begin rusting at the first sign of winter. The wheel bearings in the bike are also grossly undersized and the spacer that stops the rear wheel bearings being crushed is also a couple mm too short. This results in the rear wheel bearings needing to be changed twice as often as oil. Even more often if you ride on anything but the smoothest of roads.

Value vs rivals 3 out of 5

Drinks very little fuel. I can get much more than 150 miles from the 3 gallon tank.

Equipment 3 out of 5

No real equipment on the bike to speak of. Not even a kill-switch. The dash is about on-par with what you get on most modern 125cc bikes however also has problems with water ingress.

Buying experience: Although it is a nice bike I would not buy one unless you go second-hand and spend less than £1000. Buying new it's not worth the hassle the wheel bearings and dodgy sensors will cause.

I bought my Adventure model back in June as something that I could learn on with a view to riding a large sized 125. I get an average of 75mpg mostly duel carriageway miles and using 97ron fuel which the engine really makes the best use of. The bike is well made, and easy to keep in good order too which is good. The headlight is good, and the brakes are as good as anything else i've ridden thus far. The under-seat storage is pretty much nil, only enough room for a phone. I had to really hank up the rear shock to make it handle as it felt a bit floppy before on some bends. The screen is great - it keeps off a good deal of wind and rain on bad days, and the handlebar wind guards are really useful!! It certainly gets a good amount of attention - isn't the usual 'pizza delivery' bike and will go off road, though the first gear is a bit high for the big hills at crawl speeds!

3 out of 5 Could have been.....
24 April 2011 by Xbandito

Had this Terra for 4 months now, use it to go to dialysis three times a week, 20miles round trip on A roads. For a 125 it is "spunky", quick off the line and the handling is top notch. But to me, it is not made for the weather we have over here, I got mine in Dec and even after covering it in ACF50, most of the metal work has corroded or rusted, side stand sensor has gone pop, fuel reserve sensor will say your on reserve if you go over 60 and I have had an almighty scare when the electrics -lights, dash etc, went off one night, then rebooted like a pc, not nice when approaching a bend in the dark. This bike could have been the best 125 on the market, even though it is fun to ride and sort of economical, getting 75mpg....but I am throttle happy, which this bike needs.

5 out of 5 Small Capacity Fun
28 February 2011 by VonR

As a seasoned owner of large capacity machines over a 30 year period, The Terra 125 has come as a revelation. Purchased originally for my son to learn on, it is now my Sunday 'bike of choice' for cross country rides involving A, B, C graded roads& righst of way. Well built, plenty of power for a 125, light, tall & accommodating & very flickable in all conditions. There are very few roads on which this will feel out of its depth. You could spend 5 times the money on 10 times the capacity for an adventure bike but you may not have as much fun. Definitely recommended

This is a nice capable machine, and easy enough to live with.Engine is willing but needs to be revved, gear changes need to be done between 5 to 7k revs.It is quite economical although i have not done any long journey's on it yet so no figures yet.The seat can be a pain to replace once removed, there seems to be a knack to it however. One thing that needs to kept an eye on is what i beleive is the water trap underneath the airbox (looks like an elongated teet),it needs to be emptied regularly or will fill up and the contents seem to be sucked in by the carb which will cause difficulty in starting.
