Insurance showdown: Yamaha MT-09 vs Kawasaki Z900
Kawasaki's new Z900 replaces the Z800 and with the new, bigger motor goes head-to-head against Yamaha's MT-09 which itself has been updated for 2017 with revised suspension, electronics, quickshifter, slip-assist clutch and a new, marmite front face.
On paper both bikes are incredibly close. The Z900 is the most powerful, pumping out 123bhp compared to the 113bhp of the MT-09, but it's also heavier at 210kg. The Yamaha weighs almost 20kg less at 193kg.

The Yamaha is the cheaper bike to buy - £7799 compared to the £8999 of the Z900, but what about when it comes to insurance? We calculated quotes for both motorcycles using MCN Compare for a 46-year-old retail manager living in Hull with five years no claims bonus. The bikes will be garaged and secured with a disc lock and Datatag. He covers up to 4000 miles a year, so just misses out on #ride5000miles.
The Kawasaki Z900 is slightly more expensive, with a fully comprehensive price of £151.96 and a total excess of £550. The MT-09 isn't much cheaper at £131.29, but the total excess for the MT-09 is much higher at £750.
Of course the quotes may differ with different details, so don't forget to get a quote for yourself.
