What is a motocross bike?
A motocross bike is an off-road motorcycle designed specifically for use on motocross tracks and in motocross competitions. They're typically identified by their minimal bodywork and single cylinder engine, usually or 250 or 450cc, although other displacements are available, usually for kids.
Motocross bikes differ from enduro and trail bikes in that they have no lights or anything that will weigh them down. They're also much more aggresive and harder to ride. As standard motocross bikes are not road legal.
Do motocross bikes need insurance?
Off-road bike insurance can cause some confusion. If you're only going to ride your bike off-road and on private land with the owner's permission, then insurance is not a requirement. But if your off-road bike is road legal and you plan to ride it on the road then you'll need the same insurance as you would for any other road legal motorcycle.
Is off-road bike insurance expensive?
Like all insurance it's always different for everybody and there are a huge amount of variables. If your motocross bike is a bigger and more powerful 450 then the insurance is likely to be more than it would be for a 250cc motocross bike. Likewise the level you compete at may also have an impact. If you only use your motocross for riding on private land or for track days, then it will probably be less than if you race regularly.
How can I get cheaper off-road bike insurance?
Getting the best insurance price for you and your bike is all about being honest. Make sure the insurer knows exactly how you plan to use your bike and how many modifications, if any, you've made. Keeping your bike locked and secure overnight will also help, as pure motocross bikes don't have keys or steering locks.
Popular motocross bikes
KTM are the most popular off-road brand, and you'll find plenty of the orange machines in motocross paddocks up and down the country. But the Japanese also make great motocross bikes as well, so you'll always find a huge variety of bikes at motocross meetings.
