Motorcycle insurance bargains: Suzuki DRZ400

Motorcycle insurance costs are an important consideration for any bike buyer. That's why MCN is highlighting some of the best cheap-to-insure motorcycles out there. This time it's the Suzuki DRZ400.

Insurance group: 9
Engine: 398cc 4v single, 5 gears
Power: 39bhp
Top speed: 94mph
Weight: 133kg

The Suzuki DR-Z400 is a rugged little dual-purpose commuter, capable of taking you to work through town every day and providing greenlaning fun on the weekends. Looks especially good as a supermoto. At group 9 it's cheap to insure, too.

The DR-Z400's engine is a lazily tuned 398cc single. As you'd expect it runs out of puff at motorway speeds, but its punchy enough to lift the front wheel over obstacles when greenlaning and has enough low down power to make squirting around traffic in town a breeze.

The handling is good around town and on green lanes, but it doesn't suit the open road - it's a bit vague in faster corners. Stick to the city, or fit some knobblies and hit the dirt.

The Suzuki DR-Z400 is no-nonsense, so don't expect much in the way of equipment. Having said that the rev counter and speedo are clear, there's a tool bag on the rear end and there's bags of parts and tuning accessories out there for the DR-Z.

The finish isn't great, paint can easily be rubbed off by your boots and wheel-bearings are said to need regular re-greasing or they begin to fail. The DR-Z is popular with bike thieves too, so if you're buying one keep an eye on it and budget for some added security.
