New rider: Book a free motorcycle taster session

Have you ever wondered if motorcycling is for you?

1 of 2

If you’ve never been on a motorcycle before and don’t know where to start then perhaps try Get On – the organisation that helps budding riders try motorcycling for the first time.

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to ride a motorcycle or scooter Get On can help to provide a flavour of what it’s all about. They provide a non-committed taster session, which could help you decide if it’s the right thing for you to do, before commiting to any training or even think about buying a bike.

Karen Cole, Director of Safety and Training for the Motorcycle Industry Association, which backs Get On events, says this is an ideal introduction to motorcycling:

“If you’ve never tried a motorcycle or scooter, but always wondered what it’s like, this is your opportunity to do so.”

“Whether you are looking for a way of saving time on your journey to work by avoiding traffic queues, Get On will help you discover if motorcycling or scootering is for you, in a safe and structured environment. You can also get advice on where to go to find high quality training in your local area.”

What will happen at the session?

Riders will have 45 minutes with an instructor in an enclosed area where they will learn the basics of what is required when riding a motorcycle.

The instructor will introduce the rider to the functions of a bike – using the gears, brake and also slow speed handling.

The motorcycles and protective clothing will be provided by Get On too – so all that’s needed to do is show up and ride.

If, from the taster sessions, you decide that you want to get on the road with two wheels then your instructor can also give advice on taking the next steps towards getting on the road. They’ll also be able to help find an MCIAC accredited training school in which you can complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) that’s required to ride with L-plates on the road.

Do I need a licence?

The best thing about a Get On session is that you don’t need any licence whatsoever to take part in a taster session – not even a provisional licence.

Anybody aged 14 or over is eligible to try out the taster sessions and is perfect for those who might have never ridden a bike before.

Those wishing to take part can book a place ahead of their visit to guarantee a spot. Booking can be done by calling 02746 408 040 or through the Get On website. Alternatively, riders can show up and book on the day, subject to availability.
