Infra-red movement sensor

Despite living in an area of Norwich with low levels of crime, Peter Jenks’ insurance company insisted he garaged his Triumph Bonneville, installed immobilisers and secured it with a lock.

Hoping it would result in a lower premium, Peter thought he’d go a step further and extend his house alarm to his garage.

The wireless burglar alarm has a base station in the house and an

infra-red sensor in the garage. The 127dB siren goes off whenever someone comes within 6in of the bike.

However, Peter was surprised to discover it had no effect on his insurance premium.

He said: ” I had a £14 discount on my premium when I bought a disc lock, but no discount when I had the garage fitted with an alarm. Why don’t insurance firms recognise the value of an alarm? ”

Cost: £150.
