The war on speed gets nasty

A special team of scientists has been told by the Government to think the unthinkable in a bid to make British roads safer and less congested.

And two of the most worrying proposals being considered by the think-tank are electronic tags for speeders and having Gatsos run by profit-making private companies.

The most cost-effective solution to tagging speeders’ bikes would be to fit a nationwide network of small receivers around the country’s road network.

It wouldn’t need to cover every inch of road, just the ones which carry the most traffic.

To the money men, the beauty of the system lies in its complete automation. No manual reading of photos would need to take place, and the problems of obscured or false numberplates wouldn’t arise.

Another idea being considered involves speed cameras which are run by private companies. They’d be in charge of placing and maintaining the cameras, and sending out fines.

One of the boffins working on the proposals said: ” If you take a step back from the issue, it makes sense. Letting private firms run the fixed cameras will free up police to get on with their jobs. ”
