Association wants review of speed limits

The Association of British Drivers (ABD) is calling for a review of the way speed limits are set in this country.

It wants an independent body of experts to take over from local authorities after what it sees as a widespread overzealous reaction to Government campaigns, very often counter to police advice.

It’s the fact that local authorities need have no specialist knowledge that concerns the ABD. The ABD suggests this new body should be made up from police traffic officers, members of the advanced driving and riding bodies and experts from The Driving Standards Agency.

Other organisations that they’d like to see contributing include The RAC Foundation, the AA, the British Motorcyclists Federation, the Motorcycle Action Group, Road Haulage Federation and of course the Association of British Drivers.

ABD Road Safety spokesman, Mark McArthur-Christie said: ” For speed limits to be respected by road users, it is essential that they are appropriate to the road environment and set on a consistent basis.

” It is increasingly common for drivers to encounter a 60 mph limit in one authority, and a 30 mph in its next door neighbour on roads of similar character, so it’s hardly surprising that limits are held in growing disrepute. ”

Do you think it’s about time we had ” experts ” rather than councils setting speed limits – will they make the situation worse or better? Click on the link on the right and tell us.
