Special Essex court hears fifty 100mph speeders

Nearly fifty riders and drivers who notched up speeds of more than 100mph on the new A130 by pass will be dealt with at a special one-off hearing at Witham magistrates court in Essex today (Friday June 1).

They were all clocked by Chelmsford police during March, the first full month that the road was open.

The five and a half mile northern section of the bypass has no junctions, is virtually dead straight and combined with freshly laid Tarmac the temptation to speed has proved irresistible to some motorists.

The road was planned because traffic and accident rates along the old A130 had given Essex County Council cause for concern.

An Essex police spokesman said: ” People who travel at dangerous speeds are not only putting themselves at risk but also the lives of other road users.”
