A Government report five years in the making recommends a review of the Direct Access Scheme, rider improvement and speed awareness courses for offending motorcyclists, an advertising campaign to make other road users aware of motorcycles, a review of bus lane laws and the mainstreaming of motorcycling into the transport planning process.

The proposals are included in “The Advisory Group on Motorcycling: Final Report to Government. The document was created by the Advisory Group on Motorcycling, established by the Government in May 1999. members include MAG, the BMF, the Motor Cycle Industry Association, the Motorcycle Retailers Association, the Desptach Association, and the Motorcycle Rider Training Association, alongside the AA, RAC Foundations, and the Association of Cheif Police Offiers.

“Motorcycling is on the increase, and many of the measures in the report will safeguard the future of the market, improve rider safety and put motorcycling at the heart of UK transport policy,” said Frank Finch, motorcycle director of the Retail Motor Industry Federation. “What is crucial now is that the Government continues to work closely with the motorcycle community to take forward these proposals, and to make sure the recommendations are adopted.”
