Volunteer villagers get their own speed guns

Volunteer villagers are being armed with speed guns to zap speeding motorists.

And if the great and the good of the Kent countryside catch you going over their limit they’ll take down your reg number, pass your details on to police and persistent offenders could end up getting fixed penalties.

The most likely outcome is that you’ll get a sternly-worded letter, though.

The volunteers go out in pairs dressed in fluorescent jackets paid for by parish councils. The local rates also fund the speed guns – at a cost of £160.

The scheme is being tried in a number of Kent villages. A similar scheme was planned in Cheshire in January this year.
