World's priciest bike

1 of 1

Imagine paying nearly £90,000 for a bike. Well that’s what one anonymous UK collector did when he went shopping at a classic bike auction in the US last weekend.

The bike he bought was a 1936 Brough Superior SS-100, one of only 75 remaining of the 102 bikes that were made. It sold for a record breaking $164,500.

It was also one that was previously owned and ridden by the bikes creator George Brough and was still in a completely unrestored, but fantastic, condition.

The Brough wasn’t the only bike up for sale though with everything from a 1912 American to a whole host of bike memorabilia going under the hammer at the Bonhams & Butterfileds Los Angeles auction.

A 2003 Indian Chief with just the delivery mileage on the clocks was sold for almost $20,000 on behalf of US TV star Brad Garrett. Garrett donated all the proceeds to charity.

The event was timed to coincide with the Love Ride, the biggest single day bike event in the US with more than 25,000 people turning up, so the auction floor was rammed with potential buyers.

Other classics sold included 1949 Vincent Black Shadow that went for $49,450, a 1950 Indian Chief for $34,500, a 1948 Vincent HRD Series B Rapide $26,450, a 1912 American sold for $47,150 and a 1947 Harley-Davidson “Knucklehead” which went for $25,875.
