Tougher tests for elderly

A rider paralysed in an accident with an 87-year-old driver is calling for regular and compulsory retests for the elderly, according to the BBC.

Marcus Watkin has been awarded £4.4m in damages after being thrown from his bike when the pensioner drove across his path. He will have to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

Watkins wants a law brought in forcing drivers to prove their fitness before they can get insurance.

Drivers over 70 are currently expected to renew their licence every three years – declaring themselves fit.
